Winter deepens now, many branches bare, many leaves decaying into soil. Nights are crisp and blacker than ever, the stars bright and cold. The sap of winter has pulled deep into the heartwood. If ever there were a season of inwardness, it is this season. Now we should wrap ourselves in blankets, gather together in the orange fire-glow, and commit entirely to the darkness. In the stark, clear earth of winter, our aloneness and loneliness in the dark of night causes us to speak true words. We must speak these words: to damp fields of yellow grasses, to sandy beaches washed smooth by winter waves, to green forests fragrant with rotting leaves. To speak these words is to be a true lover of winter.
