We sometimes hear that to ease our inner pain and suffering, we should look inside and find the source of the problem. Our troubles stem from a fixable condition within, this approach suggests. This is true, and to contemplate the origins of our unrest lifts the heaviness. At the same time, we can also look in the opposite direction, yet discover the same relief. When we turn toward others, when we consider how each person has problems just like our own, ours become more bearable. We see that we are not alone in being human, with all the complications and beauty being human entails. Seeing our collective humanness makes us more forgiving with others and more caring for ourselves. We find that it is possible to change, it is possible to feel better.
